Sustainable Decor: Water Bottles to Rugs
Wonder where your plastic containers go after you toss them in the recycle bin? You might be relaxing with or standing on some now! World Market now features beautiful rugs and pillows woven from recycled PET plastics. Read on for more about the process.
A PET Primer
PET stands for polyethylene terephthalate, a plastic used to make clear, lightweight food and beverage containers and packaging. It's 100% recyclable and is the most common recycled plastic in the world. More than 1.5 billion pounds of PET bottles and containers are recovered each year for recycling in the U.S. alone. You can easily identify a PET container by its number 1 in the triangular "chasing arrows" recycling logo.
The PET Process
To make our beautifully soft, hard-wearing rugs the factory takes plastic bottles through a process of washing, shredding and spinning them into fiber that's dyed and can be used again and again. The finished fabric is then handwoven into a sturdy rug or pillow with a feel very similar to wool. PET rugs are easily machine washed and line dried and are also 100% recyclable!
How You Can Help
You probably know we use a huge amount of plastic in food packaging, which ends up polluting the earth and its oceans. Reducing use is key, plus be sure to properly recycle your PET water bottles and other containers, while seeking out rPET (recycled PET) products for purchase. World Market offers an on-trend selection of rPet-made products for both indoor and outdoor use.
