Galvin Cafeteria Table 4.5 5 16 16
An Indestructible, Stylish, Early 1900's Style Industrial Loft Table I was intrigued by this table when I first saw it. I was originally looking for a more traditional rustic-style dinner table, but the Galvin Cafeteria Table really caught my eye with its orderly, linear shapes, ruggedness, and industrial style. Style-wise, it is quite unique. After doing some research online, I found that this table is something of a homage piece to a 1920's factory lunch hall table called the "No 314" sectional 4-seat swing-out style table from a company called "Sani." The main differences between this table and the original piece are that the tabletop is made of lenga (a wood with about the same Janka Hardness as American Cherry), and the metal used is welded steel vs. cast iron. In addition, the tabletop is reinforced with an apron of steel, and is clamped down onto the table legs using steel plates recessed into the tabletop. At the base of the table, the original piece ends in cast iron feet, while the Galvin Cafeteria Table is actually bolted to two heavy, thick slabs of lenga wood, which extend 5 inches or so from the edge of the table. This makes it more friendly to flooring and gives it a very firm footing. Finally, the ladder apron is bolted to the center of the tabletop as well as the legs, creating a triangulated structure, increasing the rigidity of the table. In all, it is pretty clear that some engineering thought went into the design and creation of this repro piece. The table surface is a dark brown mahogany color, giving it a subdued, stately appearance. The tabletop is composed of 6 wood panels, joined using a slot and groove construction, with micro-eased / beveled edges between panels. The finish is "distressed", giving the surface a rustic look. Although the table is shorter than most 6-seater dining tables, it is actually wider as well, giving a very pleasant roomy feel. There is plenty of room between place settings to put communal serving dishes, drinks, etc. Finally, this table is incredibly heavy and stiff. At 215lbs, it is not going anywhere. Legs are made of 1/8" thick steel i-beams. Nothing can really hurt this table. In addition to its weight, the design makes it the most laterally stiff I have ever seen. It simply will not wobble in any direction. Because all joints are steel, I don't expect it to ever loosen up either. It is quite simply the most solidly built dining table I have ever seen, which is a big plus to me. Some downsides: The stool seat heights are about two inches too low for me. I prefer to sit "over" my tables, if that means anything. Although I am 5'11", my torso is on the shorter side, and this table accentuates this. Not a big issue, but I feel more comfortable sitting on a cushion. Only an inch of overhang on the sides means little room for seating more than 4 people. However, because of two cutouts on the table legs, it is actually quite comfortable for people to sit on the edges of the table - they just don't get much table surface if they do. The table is not cheap, although as other reviewers have mentioned, having the stools included gives it added value. Overall, I would say that this table is fun, unique, and stylish. It lends a sense of order and elegance to a room. It is also well-built, perhaps almost to a fault. I'm quite happy with my purchase, and would definitely recommend this table to folks who love this style of furniture. November 12, 2013
EXACTLY WHAT WE NEEDED When my wife & I were in the store , we weren't even looking for a table. she happened to see how cool the seats swiveled under the table & we both thought this what was needed in our small " dining" area that's basically a 7.5' X 12' extension of our galley kitchen . You had to squeeze if you have 4 chairs the way our old setup was , NOT AN ISSUE WITH THIS TABLE . So much more space . The 2 boxes are heavy , luckily we have a real dolly @ home & wasn't an issue offloading it , just the fact I still lament I traded my Audi A6 Allroad ( which this table would have fit ) for a VW Golf GTI & no chance of fitting . I rented a van @ Uhaul ( $40 ) brought it home during a work day when I was off so as to "surprise " my wife . Took 30 minutes to unbox everything & with the help of a 19mm socket in addition to the one they provide .....assembly took about an hour . I had to play a bit with the top 2 bars to get them flush , but that's why you don't tighten everything down so you can shimmy things to get it right . The "industrial " look of it matches our gun metal blue porcelain floor & I love how the top to me resembles something you'd see in a pub ( my 2 cents ) . Later on we will invest in the 2 other stools that match this table before turkey day . Worth every penny . Another smaller thought tho still made in Asia ( Vietnam ) at least we can say not made in China as almost everything is nowadays . November 12, 2013
Solid, quality and unique I saw this table online about a month or so ago. We needed a new kitchen table and although I fell in love online, I didn't want to spend that much money on a table without seeing it (plus the large shipping surcharge). Luckily, our store had it on display. Well, I loved it even more. We debated about the spinning stools (2 boys 8 and 6) but decided that the quality and design of the table outweighed it. AND they had it in stock. It was friends and family weekend, so I saved enough to get two extra stools for added seating on the ends when needed. We just got it, but I LOVE it. My husband put it together in a couple of hours. I don't think I could have done it alone because this thing is HEAVY. I mean heavier than any furniture I've purchased. But it's so solid and beautiful. The table space is very generous for a family of 4 and even though we are seated next to each other, there is plenty of elbow room and no invading of space. The swivel out stools make it 100 times easier to clean under the table and when not in use, we push them under to save room. I can't say enough about this table. People that see it LOVE how unique. I guess if you made me say something bad, the only con I have is that it was pricey for what I wanted to spend on a table, but I have a feeling it will last for a long, long time. October 13, 2013
UNIQUE AND STURDY WINNER! THIS TABLE MAY COST A BIT, BUT YOU REALLY GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR WITH THIS TABLE. SEATING IS REALLY A COMFORTABLE SIT. THIS IS FROM SOMEONE WHO USUALLY ONLY LIKE STOOLS WITH BACKS TO THEM.(THAT'S WHY YOU'LL NEVER SEE ME IN THE BLEACHERS AT WRIGLEY!) THE TABLE HAS BEAUTIFUL CHARACTER AND HAS A VERY SOLID BUILD TO IT. THE SWIVELING NATURE TO THE STOOLS ARE A FUN FEATURE FOR MY KIDS WHO LIKE THE MOTION ELEMENT. IN ADDITION, BEING ABLE TO TUCK STOOLS AWAY WHEN NOT IN USE IS A REAL CONVENIENCE. IN SHORT, YOU REALLY CAN'T LOSE ON THIS TABLE IF YOU LIKE THE UNIQUE RUSTIC TRANSITIONAL APPEAL THAT THIS TABLE OFFERS. ALSO, A BREEZE TO ASSEMBLE IF YOU CAN FOLLOW SIMPLE DIRECTIONS. October 1, 2013
Wonderful, fun, different piece This table and chair combo is great. Went to check it out in the store before ordering on-line. Once assembled, it looked just as good, if not better, than in the store. My husband didn't have much trouble putting it together. One note - it arrives in very large, very heavy boxes. We opened the boxes up in our garage and brought the pieces upstairs in our townhouse individually. September 28, 2013
COMPLIMENTS GALORE! We get a compliment every time someone visits. It is unique and could fit in all settings (modern, classic, etc.). When the chairs are folder under the area looks so much cleaner than a table with disconnected chairs. Everyone loves this table and it is such fun with the spinning seats. All tables should be made with seats connected to the table. It makes mopping and sweeping so easy and no sliding noises on the tile. Under the table is clear so you have a ton of legroom. Great for tall and short people alike and of course our kids love it! September 26, 2013
Unique! This table is so fun and unique! We saw it in-store and then decided to order online a few weeks later (because it was out of stock in our local store). The freight shipping cost is pretty outrageous and that is my only regret with this table. WM really needs to offer a FREE ship-to-store option when they're out of stock. The table arrived in two very heavy boxes. It seemed like it was going to be a long night ahead of us, but most of the table was pre-assembled. The table top needed to be secured to the legs, and then the stools needed to be assembled to the table. Done! It took my husband and I only 1.5 hours to put together. The most annoying part was all of the styrofoam it was packaged in. We are beyond pleased with the look and functionality of this table. We've received non-stop compliments and it's definitely a conversation starter. September 19, 2013
very unique This table is exactly what it looks like in the picture maybe even more industrial looking. The wood is a strong quality soft wood, the metal areas are a heavy duty sturdy metal - there is nothing cheap looking or feeling about this table! They say it is 200 lbs and it is every bit that and even feels like more when putting it together. It went together easily for my husband but did take time (about two hours total but he was being super careful because i was watching every move) :) There are a lot of bolts so I would help by getting them started then he would tighten all of them up with the tool that was included with the table. The instructions say to just clean it by using soap and water, I've done this and works fine but it does seem like it needs a wood polish or something more on it to protect it from drying out and or staining. The groves in the top are a pain to clean on a regular basis but that is also part of the cool industrial look. I love sweeping/mopping the floor and not have to worry about moving chairs! The seats are fun and a good height to the table. The only reason I marked "good" on the value was because the shipping/freight costs were so high. I actually got "free shipping" but when all was said and done the freight costs were a couple hundred dollars so that was a bit dissatisfying especially when so many places do it for free now-a-days.
