Before the multi-hyphenate renaissance man Lance Bass wed his husband Michael Turchin, the two were living in what they viewed as a series of transitional homes. Now that they’ve finally settled on a house together—one that they plan on living in for a long time—their style has evolved into a more cohesive look that’s comfortable and eclectic, yet unfussy and absolutely welcoming.
“The pieces that we have in the home are quality pieces, especially now that there is a unified intent of building and sharing a home together,” says Lance, who was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule and open up his outdoor space to the World Market team.
He shares where in their outdoor space he loves to entertain, the dishes that guests have come to love and expect, and an eclectic playlist that’s pitch perfect for any laid-back summer outdoor party.
Your outdoor area is stunning! Describe your furniture and decor style for us…
Lance: Eclectic and chic, yet functional and comfortable. We always make sure to have plenty of seating available for all of our many friends.
Do you usually hangout in the outdoor area in the morning before the sun gets too high, or are you both more into entertaining around sunset?
Lance: Our house has an amazing sunset view, so we like to entertain around that time.
We know you’re a busy couple, but when you have a moment at home to spend outdoors, what do you love to do together?
Lance: We usually invite between 5-15 people over for tapas and drinks. We love trying all sorts of different foods, which is why we like tapas—it’s fun, the perfect bite size, and easy to eat. People drink everything from wine to beer, and cocktails to soda. As hosts, we try to have all sorts of beverages on hand.
What are some of your favorite cocktails to serve?
Lance: Mojitos and World Market’s low-calorie flavored sodas (mixed with vodka). We love the World Market Blood Orange flavor!
If you had to pick just one, which would you bring home: hammock or daybed?
Lance: As you can see, it was impossible for me to pick just one, so I went with both! The hammock is an amazing place to nap, but the daybed is better when lounging with friends. You need to bring home both pieces.
On which outdoor piece do you find your (pawed) babies always lounging?
Lance: The daybed. They love taking afternoon naps on it! (Who can blame them?)
You’re planning your next outdoor party. We’re curious—what’s on the playlist?
- “Be The One” by Dua Lipa
- “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, featuring Justin Bieber
- “Crying In The Club” by Camila Cabello
- “Sign Of The Times” by Harry Styles
- “California Dreaming” by The Mamas & The Papas
We want full disclosure here. Between the two of you, who is more of the social butterfly and entertainer?
Lance: I am definitely the social butterfly and entertainer! And I usually plan the menu. But Michael and I both decide what music will be played.
You have quite a few outdoor pieces. Which one do find yourselves going back to time and again?
Lance: The outdoor living room set by the pool. You’ll find us lounging there come sunset with our friends—and dogs!
