When actress Lesley Nicol, Downton Abbey’s head cook and keeper of the best “downstairs” zingers from the show, moved to Los Angeles in 2014, she and her husband expected to spend a lot more time in their backyard, but found themselves not enjoying the outdoor space to its fullest because it was sparsely furnished and lacked a cozy appeal.
Enter designer and blogger Amy Buchanan of Atta Girl Says, who wanted to make Lesley’s dream of wiling away the days while perched on a lounge chair—from the comfort of her own backyard—come true. The once sleepy and lackluster space is now an outdoor hub for dining, entertaining and lounging. Vibrant decor accents in ocean-inspired shades, stylish and hardwearing modern outdoor furniture, and cozy pieces like coastal throw pillows, reversible outdoor rugs, and oh-so-soft throws make the space feel like home.
“This space is designed for entertaining, so I wanted to make sure there was plenty of seating options for guests, as well as lots of side tables on which people can set their drinks,” says Amy.
