The days are getting noticeably longer, the frost is starting to fade, and we’ve got tropical escape plans on the brain, which means spring has officially sprung! Not everyone can book a flight to an island destination this weekend, but we can all at least make a cocktail that will transport us into that beachy state of mind.

Since today is National Beer Day, we’re making a shandy (which is, for those not in the know, beer mixed with a non-alcoholic drink) that’s playful, fruity and has a 100% success rate of putting you on island time.

Traditionally, shandies are a combination of beer and lemonade, which is very refreshing, but since we’ve got spring break on the mind, we’re going to make a shandy with guava and rum.

I suggest using a white lager, which has slightly grainy malt flavor and is slightly bitter. The white lager also has very light citrus notes, which pair well with the grapefruit and guava flavors. The rum’s spiced notes bring out a roundness to the bitter beer and grapefruit, making this complex cocktail a favorite in my books.

So—rim those tall glasses with salt and fill each one with ice because you’re about to enter into a weekend of spirited spring entertaining!
