The holidays are over and it’s time for a fresh start in the new year. This usually means cleaning up one’s diet, swapping treats and sweets for healthier fare such as salads and smoothies. I have the perfect smoothie recipe to ease you out of holiday indulgences and into a healthy New Year: A Tropical Avocado Smoothie!

A Sweet Avocado Smoothie

I love avocados and eat them in any way I can. Diced over salads, in soups, mashed up over toast, or my personal fave — a giant bowl of guacamole. Besides the usual applications of avocado in recipes, they are great in recipes such as baked goods and smoothies. Avocados lend a super creamy consistency to smoothies. Makes you feel like you’re eating rich ice cream when it’s just tropical fruits including pineapple, bananas and coconut blended with avocados.

I prefer to use pretty ripe avocados for this smoothie. Not brown, but definitely very soft. I also opt for frozen fruits so the smoothie doesn’t get watered down with too much ice. Omit the water if you use a lighter fat coconut milk or coconut milk beverage. I use full fat canned coconut milk and water. Honey and ginger round out the flavor of the smoothie with sweetness and a nice refreshing zing from the ginger. Protein powder is optional for an extra protein boost. I say stick with plain or vanilla protein powder for this recipe.

You can also freeze avocados for smoothies. Cut in half. Scoop out pit then peel. Place halves on wax paper and freeze. Then into a resealable baggie. This is great for when you have a ton of avocados about to go ripe and you really don’t want to make 10 lbs of guacamole all at once. Well. Maybe you don’t. I could eat that easily.
