How to Make Your Own Eggnog
Step 1. Gather your ingredients. To make your own eggnog, you will need 6 large egg yolks, 1 cup sugar, 2 cups whole milk, 1 cup heavy cream, 3 ounces of rum, and nutmeg.
Step 2: Separate the eggs, placing the whites in one bowl and the yolks in another.
Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, combine the yolks and sugar until just mixed.
Step 4: Using a hand mixer, beat the yolks and sugar until smooth and creamy and light yellow in color. Set aside.
Step 5: In a saucepan and over medium heat, heat the milk and nutmeg just until steaming. Slowly temper the egg with the hot milk mixture by carefully pouring the sugar and yolk mixture into the milk while whisking continuously. Do this step slowly, a little at a time, to keep the eggs from scrambling. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly until the eggnog begins to thicken slightly. Use a cooking thermometer to monitor when the eggnog reaches 160°F.
Step 6: Remove pan from heat and stir in heavy cream, vanilla extract and rum. Place eggnog in refrigerator for several hours to chill before serving.
Step 7: To rim your milk bottles in edible glitter, roll the lip of each bottle in a small plate of water and then immediately roll the lip in edible glitter. This is an easy way to add instant pizazz to your party!
Step 8: Use small donuts to garnish your eggnog by placing donuts over paper straws. Keeping with the black and white theme, create a donut tower by alternating chocolate and powdered sugar donuts on the Ivory Amelie Cake Stand.
Tip: If no alcohol is added, fresh eggnog should be used within a few days. If alcohol has been added, the eggnog should be used within seven days. Stir the eggnog well before serving as the nutmeg has a tendency to settle to the bottom.
