A new summer obsession has begun and it’s Hawaiian shave ice. No, there isn’t a “d” missing from “shave” – this is what the locals call it, and it’s exactly what it sounds like! Refreshing, fluffy chips of ice waiting for your flavor imagination to run wild.

For this particular cocktail, we wanted to work with tropical flavors worthy of outdoor summer celebrations. Mango, passionfruit and guava juice pair perfectly and also happen to be deliciously decadent with a splash of rum. Don’t forget to serve it in a halved fruit like papaya or coconut (or a good old-fashioned cocktail glass, a mug or a bowl), with a topping of toasted coconut for the ultimate Hawaiian touch.

Making your own syrups is a breeze, not to mention it opens up a wider catalog of flavor opportunities when concocting your tropical creation.

  • Simply add 1 cup of the juice of your choice to a saucepan with 1 cup of sugar
  • Bring to a boil and stir in a bit of arrowroot (or cornstarch) to your preferred thickness

That’s it! Easy breezy, and you’re totally going to impress everyone with your curated syrup bar filled with mix-and-match flavors.

Not into rum? Not a problem. Depending on what type of fruit flavors you want to feature, tequila or vodka would make great substitutes; think citrus, berries or even melon. In fact, you don’t need to add any alcoholic spirits to just enjoy this sweet, icy summer treat perfect for kids and adults alike. And with outdoor festivities in full swing, there’s nothing quite like this crave-worthy mound of fluffy ice dressed in tropical fruit flavors to beat the summer heat in style.

Now get ready for some serious island sips because you’ve just found your new summer staple. Aloha!
