The Story Behind It

How to Create a Terrarium

These lush miniature landscapes are refreshing sights during winter months, and make for soothing scenery all year long. Follow our three easy steps to create a terrific budget-friendly terrarium in no time flat (no green thumbs necessary!).

Step 1: Choose a Container
Just about any vessel with an opening large enough to fit the necessary plants and materials will do nicely. Our favorite terrarium containers include: Clear glass cloches, candleholders, vases, bowls, water pitchers, mason jars, apothecary jars and glass kitchen storage jars.

Choose according to the plants you wish to feature and where you want to display them in your home. Moisture-loving succulents thrive in a container with a lid to retain humidity, and are great for low-light areas. Cacti do well in drier, open-air vessels, and are perfect for sunnier spots. Be sure the container you use is washed out and clean before you start.

Very substantial and versitile. This is a very sturdy, quite substantial piece that can be used so many ways. In winter, I have flameless candles in it on a remote control, and I can fit 5 medium sized candles of varying height to make it look very cozy. In warmer months, I plan to plant a few little sprouts of small houseplants in it. There are so many different ways to use it, and it looks very much to scale on my large kitchen table. Really glad I bought it. January 15, 2015
Unique Terrarium I have a "thing" for terrariums. While I admit I haven't planted anything in this yet, it is a beautiful mix of glass (the top) and a concrete-look material (the base.) This combination of materials and the shape should ensure this terrarium would look good in almost any style room. I like the fact that, on their website, World Market gives basic directions for planting terrariums. June 18, 2014
Bought Two The glass dome is seamless and very attractive. I bought one as a Valentines / Birthday gift for my sister. She loves it! I liked the one I bought for my sister well enough that I called the store to have the last available wide terrarium put on hold until I could get back to the store. Today I purchased the one I had on hold. I am using it as a LED candle holder. They are a little pricey but I love it. February 5, 2013
