The Story Behind It

The Coir of the Coconut

Coir of the Coconut

Yes, it's delicious, but the coconut is also quite useful in many unexpected ways. Found in tropical and subtropical climates, this iconic fruit is a superb source of strong fibers known as coir. These durable fibers, once used to craft ship ropes because of their extreme toughness and strength, are extracted from the husk of the coconut between its outer coat and its hard internal shell. Today, these remarkable fibers are produced mainly in India and Sri Lanka, where coconut trees grow in abundance. Coir is ideal for crafting sturdy items such as floor mats, brushes and, perhaps our favorite coconut item: doormats. With their natural look and coarse texture, these unique coir pieces stand up well to wear and tear and make a statement while doing it. With inviting designs exclusive to World Market, our coir welcome mats withstand the elements and the shoes of all your guests - and who knew it all started with a coconut?

Walrus and Penguin Doormat 4 5 1 1
Too cute! This rug is the cutest! My only reservation is that the picture on the website makes the colors look pretty vibrant and the material itself soft, the rug is actually made of some pretty rough bristle and so the color is not as bright as the picture makes it look. That being said, I still bought it. The walrus and it toboggan are too cute. I showed a friend and she even went and got one, no wonder its on back order. November 26, 2012
