Was really excited about making the dish for my daughter and I. Smelled a little odd while cooking, but thought that it would be better when it was ready. Tasted it....just plain rice has more flavor. Added shrimp, paprika, garlic powder, gobs of salt and pepper thinking that would help. Pretty gross. Picked the shrimp out and threw out the rest. Will never purchase again.
Others must enjoy this paella mix as much as I do because I just bought the last 3 packages remaining on my local store's shelf! Disappointed to read the negative reviews, however, I've always prepared this paella with the following recipe modifications. It turns out FANTASTIC and rivals some of the great paellas caseras that I've had in Spain. The additional ingredients I use are extra virgen Spanish olive oil, Palacios Spanish chorizo, 12-15 peeled, raw shrimp, chicken stock in lieu of water, 1/2 can of drained artichoke hearts, 1 cup of frozen peas. I add a few tablespoons of the olive oil to a heated pan and add the sliced chorizo to saute. Once the chorizo starts giving off its flavor/oil I then add the shrimp and saute for only a minute or two (the shrimp will absorb some of the chorizo drippings#. Continue cooking paella according to package directions #incl. a splash of white wine) but use chicken stock in lieu of water and add artichike hearts. At very end of cooking stir in the peas. Buen provecho! 5-star worthy!
You don't have to go to Spain to realize the this so called paella mix is awful. I have had many wonderful paellas including my own creations, but had never bought a mix before - on a whim (and with a coupon) I thought I'd try this product, but I won't make that mistake again. The product was prepared exactly as per the directions, but it tastes disastrously stale even though the expiration date is still many months in the future. Despite what seems like a zesty combination of spices in the package the prepared product is dull and essentially flavorless, I can only imagine that the cardboard packaging has more flavor. Even the addition of copious quantities of salt and pepper did nothing to enhance the bland taste. Sadly this isn't the first Trevijano product which I've found to be a disaster - I won't be trying any more of their products - ever, and I recommend that World Market discontinue carrying them too.
My sister in law recommended this paella, after reading the previous write up I was concerned. I ordered it anyway and my sister in law was right... It was delicious.... I have eaten Paella in Spain and this was very close to the real thing.. Recommend adding your own spices and maybe some shrimp or chorizo.... I will buy again...
I have been to Spain and eaten paella. This is nothing close to the real dish. I gave it a try only because the product said it was from Spain and the ingredients seemed okay. I didn't expect much from this product when I purchased it due to the freeze dried veggies. It was supposed to be a quick dinner option. I followed all the recommendations for preparing this dish. I must note that I have prepared many tasty dishes, but this was not one. Unfortunately, the final product was INEDIBLE. I ended up throwing it all out. What a waste of money and more importantly time. I would not recommend this product for any reason. My recommendation would be to make something else.
