I've owned and used this muddler for about 2 years. Maybe I'm just lucky (not usually me) but I've never experienced the water in handle issue.
I wash in dishwasher with rubber part up.

I've had mine since early April and it worked beautifully. After about four uses and four trips through the dishwasher it appears to have water trapped in the handle. I went to muddle some mint and lemon and the mixture started turning a black/grey color. I threw out the lemon and mint and tried again and it still turned out a dirty gray color. When I held a paper towel to the seam where the black plastic head meets the stainless steel handle, black water would leach out. Clearly this doesn't help create an appealing drink. There is definitely a problem with how it's sealed (or not for that matter).

I just bought this muddler and put it in water to remove the price sticker and it appears water got in under the black part and I can't figure out how to get it out, I just have to shake it violently and some rusted water comes out. This doesn't give me high hopes if the rusted water comes out while I muddle my drink.
