I had ordered these for my daughters (twins, age six at the time) and they loved writing secret messages to each other. The pens work great, ink always works and the light at the end of the pen is an LED style bulb which gives a good-sized, circle of light to view the message. It isn't necessary to be in a darkened room to view the messages, as the light is strong enough, but the effect is more exciting and moody to clamor off to a dark room with the pen and secret to decode.
For my girls' seven year birthday I decided upon a spy theme. So I ordered another dozen of these pens for my daughters and their party guests to discern "Top Secret" clues to the "stolen" candy box. It was a hit and a perfect addition to the grab boxes at the end of the party.
One issue I had with the dozen, is that one of the pens had a weak light. We kept this for ourselves and set out to the local World Market to pick up a replacement set (they're sold in pairs). It worked fine. So really, one in 16 was a little off.
I would buy again, as it's a fun idea that works great. The ink doesn't smear, it writes like a ball point ( a possible concern with children), and the pens come with caps that keep them usable for month and months.
