The Story Behind It

The Complex Beauty of Mehndi

Derived from the Sanskrit word "mendhika," meaning dyeing, mehndi refers to the application of henna as a temporary form of skin decoration commonly practiced in India. Traditional mehndi designs draw the sun on the palm or feet, which represents the mind. Fines lines are applied to the surface of the skin with turmeric-based paste that contains valuable Vedic healing properties centered around the idea of "awakening the inner light." Originally used as a form of decoration for brides, henna is still applied during special occasions like weddings as well as the Hindu festivals of Karva Chauth, Diwali, and Teej.
