The Story Behind It

Hanukkah

A Celebration of Miracles

The eight-day Jewish holiday called Hanukkah is held in honor of a miracle that occurred in Jerusalem during the second century BCE. According to the important Jewish text called the Talmud, the Jewish people reclaimed a temple that had been desecrated by their oppressors. While there was only enough olive oil to keep their sacred candles burning for one night, a miracle occurred and the oil burned for an entire eight days. Despite their hardships, the Jewish people felt a holy power watching over them with a blessing of solidarity and support. Hanukkah is also known as the festival of lights.

The central tradition of Hanukkah is lighting a candle for each night of the festival on a candelabrum with nine branches known as a menorah (or hanukiah). By the eighth day of Hanukkah, eight candles will have been lit. The central ninth branch is for a helper candle called the shamash. Since the menorah is symbolic, it is not used for illumination. In addition to helping keep the eight candles lit, the shamash provides extra illumination. Celebrate Hanukkah with white and blue dinnerware and serveware in honor of the colors of the Israeli flag. Our lively variety of candles includes Jewish-inspired lights with holy accents like the Star of David. Our wall décor and decorative home accents feature beautifully designed depictions of dreidels and menorahs for respectful festivities. Our uniquely crafted menorah candelabrums range in style from elegant to homey. Hanukkah is a time to celebrate Jewish cultural heritage and pay tribute to miracles and we can help light the way.
