Matte Black Ceramic Beer Growler 4 5 1 1
Unique and Beautiful Smaller-sized Growler I was immediately drawn to this jug in the store when I saw it. As a tea enthusiast I have a particular soft spot for stoneware and ceramics since they generally have the most ideal heat properties for brewing and drinking tea and look more timeless than glass does. Seeing this jug reminded me of certain Japanese sake jugs and since sake is also a favorite drink of mine, I've been considering home-brewing some soon. This jug seems like it'd be great for holding the finished product. In the mean time, I'm using this for cold brew tea. First of all, this is what you'd call a "howler" or half-growler in the US. It's not a full 64 ounce size like the ones you usually see. It holds about 36 ounces max, a little over a quart or liter. The black is a glaze and not paint, thankfully. It is also black on the inside. I love the shape and the size of the handle, but feel just a little cautious, wondering how well it will hold up when the jug is full of fluid, as the handle seems thin. Hold on to your receipt, I'd say. There seem to be a few things to be cautious of. First off, all of the jugs I saw in the store had white scratch marks on them that seemed to be from rubbing against one another or some other product during shipping. Some seemed to have them pretty badly, while others not as much. It appeared to maybe be paint residue of some sort and it washed off with some dish soap at home. The stopper is ceramic with a rubber gasket inside, so if you let it fall back after unhinging it will clang against other ceramic parts of the jug which seems like it could cause damage if you're not careful. The metal hinges for the flip-top cause metal scratch marks (like those you'd see on flatware from cutlery) around the neck of the bottle and handle, not too noticeable unless you look closely, but this seemed to affect all of them. It looks like you could easily write on this with chalk, washable paint pens, or a white china marker without damaging it. I really look forward to seeing how this jug performs over time. It seemed like a really good value for the price. January 29, 2015
