The Story Behind It

The Versatility of Abaca

Closely related to the banana plant, but oddly enough considered an herb, the abaca plant is an indigenous material of the Philippines often used to create everything from baskets and clothing to tea bags and banknotes. Abaca plants usually reach between 10 and 15 feet in height, and grow with great speed, making their fiber a terrific renewable resource - one of the reasons why we're big fans!

Abaca is perfectly suited to the construction of our artisanal handmade Madras Baskets, serving trays, drink coasters and more. To create these beautiful eco-conscious baskets, madras (the bark of the abaca plant) is harvested in long, flexible strips that range in color from light brown to nearly black. When woven into baskets, the color variation shows up with an almost marbled look, which gives each item its own unique look.
