Payal and Their Pretty Place in Indian Jewelry
Known as "payal" in Hindi, traditional Indian ankle bracelets were originally made of gold or silver and often adorned with filigree and semi-precious and precious stones. Today they are made out of a wide range of materials including natural fibers, leather, plated metals and glass beads with intricacies that differ from region to region. Typically worn as part of everyday Indian dress, payal are also used in different forms of dance. Tiny bells hang from them, producing a delicate sound as the dancer wearing them moves.
