The Story Behind It

The Unique Embellishment of Pairing Embroidery With Mirrored Glass

The traditional technique of pairing embroidery with mirrored glass is often attributed to the nomadic Banjara tribe from the Rajasthan region of India, whose brightly colored garments are typically heavily decorated with pieces of stone, cowry shells and bits of mirror glass. Banjara women are known for their colorful dress and affinity for embroidered embellishments.

Originally, small pieces of the mineral mica were used because of its reflective quality, known as "shisha," the Hindi word for "little glass." As the process evolved, artisans began to use broken thin blown-glass pieces in place of mica. Today, embroidery with mirrored glass remains a popular craft that adds a whimsical and rich accent to anything from bags and pillows to scarves and decorative blankets.
