I purchased this for my girlfriend as a birthday gift and she adored it. When it finally arrived in the mail I was a little shocked that it was so fragile. I also am not a fan of the lip of the mug, because it seems that it would be difficult to drink out of as it curves inward. It's a huge mug but obviously had to be this way given the subject. The mug doesn't seem very well suited to be more than a novelty or a figurine. I am grateful though that this was designed as my gf loves it and that she doesn't mind the imperfections.

Why is it fun? Because it's an elephant. 'Nuff said.
Why is it practical? There's more to that.
Material: The ceramic is medium-density. It's not the light-weight airy kind that breaks in a week and it's not the dense heavy kind that will be unbroken 40 years from now. It's dense enough to withstand my clumsiness.
Glaze: This is where the minus one star rating comes in. My mug is a 5/5, but I rated them as a whole. There are miniscule imperfections on some of the mugs. They're not nicks, because they're clear-glazed, and may not bother more laid-back people, but I looked at four or five mugs before I found one I liked.
Volume: The mug will hold 16 ounces, plus a comfortable amount of room for cream. The shape dimension to volume is a nice ratio (not too tall, not too wide).
Stability: It's is shaped so that it's not so tall that it is easily knocked over. Additionally, there are four elephant feet extending from the bottom of the mug that add stability. My mug is currently sitting on my padded, rounded couch arm, a feat no other mug of mine would be able to accomplish.
