The Timeless Toy: The Sock Monkey

Just like the name suggests, it all started with a pair of socks! An unmistakable icon of Americana, the sock monkey is an enduring and beloved toy that has belonged to the youth of many generations. Back in the early 1900's in Rockford, IL, a sock manufacturer named John Nelson developed the first seamless heeled socks intended as work socks. He later added a signature red heel known as "Rockfords" that quickly grew in popularity among the masses. It wasn't until the Great Depression that resourceful crafters began making monkey shaped stuffed animals out of worn out Rockford socks. Often fashioned by grandma out of grandpa's old work socks, the sock monkey was originally padded with pairs of old nylons, with sewn-on buttons for eyes. The trend exploded and is now the recognizable icon we know and love today. A true product of imagination, our nostalgic and kitschy sock monkey collection make great gifts for both young and old. Recognizable and lovable, the sock monkey has seen many incarnations over the years but remain a classic companion for their bright red lips, long legs, and cozy nature.
