The Edison Light Bulb: The Lasting Endurance of Design

In 1879, Thomas Edison invented the carbon-based filament light bulb, which could burn brightly for up to 13.5 hours. Later swapping carbon-based filament for enduring tungsten filament, he created the commercial incandescent light bulb, which could burn for over 1,200 hours. By 1883, Edison's company, General Electric, pioneered the first overhead electrical lighting system that would eventually bring electricity to street lamps.

Like other inventors of his time, Edison created a number of light bulb shapes and tweaked their brightness levels according to each task-specific need from the brilliant lighting needed for a living room space to the softer ambiance desired for a desktop. Incandescent light bulbs remain present in households today. Known for their vintage-inspired, one-of-a-kind glow, they shine beautifully when exposed on pendant, floor or table lamps.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Patti456 Nice soft glow I purchased the Edison Light Bulbs to go with the see-thru shades I purchased so you can see these cool old fashioned bulbs thru them... the light is not overbearing thru the shades as well, I was afraid regular bulbs would be too bright in shades that don't protect some of that light from your eyes. I put them in the lamps in my guest bedroom and in a floor lamp near my living room. They add a nice soft glow to the rooms. I like their uniqueness. I would purchase them for see-thru type lamp shades, or no lamp shade lighting; any other lamp shades I would not see buying these as they would only hide them and the light isn't very bright at all. In fact, I am sort of worried now that when I have guests the light won't be bright enough for their reading in bed. I'll have to see how that goes in the future. March 10, 2016

Rated 3 out of 5 by StanleyD Very cool, but at a COST I shopped around on Amazon for an Edison light bulb, but the ones at World Market were priced just as reasonable. I read some reviews on Amazon and saw some comments about energy use, but it wasn't until I got my first electric bill after I got the light bulb that I fully understood how much energy these things use! It's staggering. I knew I was going to be getting this for primarily looks, but buyer beware, that you will see it in your monthly statement. I bought this bulb for a lamp that I had on almost every evening for a couple of hours. Just by doing this, my electricity bill doubled. Now, even though I love the look, I will only have this on sparingly. February 26, 2014
