As attractive as these mugs may look, they are very brittle! Less than one year ago, I purchased a set of six mugs. Very soon after that purchase, the first mug broke--crack down the side. I thought this was perhaps a "bad egg," took it back to the store and exchanged it for an identical mug. Long story short, I am down to two mugs. The remaining two mugs either posses a hairline crack or a small chip, and it is only a matter of time before they are rendered useless. I was very disappointed in the quality of these mugs, and I wish I had taken them back to the store as each one broke.
I bought these hoping they would blend with the Muir Organic plates and bowls I bought via internet from World Market. They do that beautifully - the mug tops are just a shade lighter/whiter than the dinnerware. They also seem to be of a sturdy material - more like porcelain than a more porous substance such as pottery. I hope they hold up better than those belonging to the previous reviewer. Overall I'm completely satisfied with these beautiful mugs, but only gave 4 stars because they're made in China (not in Portugal like the dinnerware), and I'm not sure they'll last. They DO work well in the microwave - i.e., they don't overheat like the beautiful but fragile Nomad mugs that I also bought from WM.
These were my favorite mugs until...one day, probably only the second or third use, one of these mugs completely cracked down the side. I have been washing these by hand and haven't done anything harsh to them. There is no reason for them to be doing this.
