The Story Behind It

The Coir of the Coconut

Coir of the Coconut

Yes, it's delicious, but the coconut is also quite useful in many unexpected ways. Found in tropical and subtropical climates, this iconic fruit is a superb source of strong fibers known as coir. These durable fibers, once used to craft ship ropes because of their extreme toughness and strength, are extracted from the husk of the coconut between its outer coat and its hard internal shell. Today, these remarkable fibers are produced mainly in India and Sri Lanka, where coconut trees grow in abundance. Coir is ideal for crafting sturdy items such as floor mats, brushes and, perhaps our favorite coconut item: doormats. With their natural look and coarse texture, these unique coir pieces stand up well to wear and tear and make a statement while doing it. With inviting designs exclusive to World Market, our coir welcome mats withstand the elements and the shoes of all your guests - and who knew it all started with a coconut?

Rated 5 out of 5 by Thick Mat, Darker than Pictured Thrilled about this mat and its quality. I have it outside my apartment in the hallway, on a marble-like floor, and it doesn't slip. Looks much more elegant than some of my neighbors' mats. Color of the coconut coir is darker than pictured. It looks like a deep sand, not a beige like in the picture. Color didn't bother me a bit, but be aware if it would bother you. January 24, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by 2 weeks of light use and it's already falling apart Bought this for our back patio and just this week I noticed the rubber was separating and the material is starting to fray and separate from the backing. I definitely expected to get a full season of wear and tear out of this - and am disappointed it hasn't even lasted 2 weeks in a low traffic area. June 11, 2015
