Great Gingerbread House Kit! I made this with my 9yr granddaughter this week & what a good craft project for that age group! I found the directions easy to follow and the kit had almost everything you could think of which kept me from having to look for appropriate candy. We added a pretsyl fence and powdered sugar over the finished house which really finished it off. The only drawback I can see with this kit is that there was not enough icing. So I took powdered sugar, added water & made more icing. My granddaughter is so pleased with her masterpiece!! December 22, 2011
Better Than The Wilton One We have bought the Wilton kit the past few years and I was really excited to try this one. It's basically the same in that it comes with all the house pieces, powder to make the icing and some decorations. We always use a piece of card board cut to size and then wrap it in white paper... very similar to the picture online. I picked-up extra candies like peppermints, etc. to make it really sweet. Building a gingerbread house is a family project every year for us and my almost 5 year old thinks this kit is so much better because of the smell... the gingerbread smells wonderful. This kit is exactly what you would expect out of a gingerbread kit. Most kits give you the bones and you add your imagination and special touches. I think this kit is getting a bad rating from people who maybe just don't know what to expect from a gingerbread kit... *The comment about not having anything to build it on... don't know that I have ever seen a kit that comes with such. *The comment about it tasting horrible... these kits (all brands) are 'edible' per say, but I don't know anyone who ever consider actually eating one. You need to make your own fresh gingerbread for that sort of thing. I'm not a huge fan of eating something that sits out exposed or something that's been handled so much putting it together. Yuck. *Lastly, the comment about it having to dry...my daughter doesn't love having to wait, what kid does, but that's how royal icing is... it has to set up in order to be stable. It's basically glue for the house. This is the same for every store bought kit. If you are looking for a fun kit that makes a really pretty gingerbread house, this is a great kit. December 13, 2011
Fun and Easy Two Day project Although you have to put the house together ahead and give it ample time to dry (overnight is fine) -- I found this to be a wonderful holiday project to do with my children (4 & 2 years) for Christmas in 2010. This year I plan to buy one for each and invite a friend to join us in the messy fun. We embellished the house with sugar spinkles and other candies, creating a frosting tree at one end (sprinkled with green sugar) and a candy corn pathway. My littlest would have eaten all the gumdrops had I allowed it! Was a wonderful holiday decoration. Recommend to put put house together on tray you will be displaying it on. November 27, 2011
Fun xmas "project" Received as a gift, made it to serve w/other xmas cookies as dessert. Was a fun project, didn't wait overnight for roof to dry as instructions said but had no problems w/assembly (put it all together while watching "It's A Wonderful Life," by the end of the movie I was done). Plenty of decorating candy included, easy to make more icing if needed (I didn't need to). December 25, 2010
Good Kit I recommend decorating all four sides prior to assembly. Once the house has been assembled, then decorate the roof. My kids had a lot of fun with these. We will get them again next year. If you are not going to eat the house, you can use plaster of paris for assembly...it dries faster and harder than icing. We also purchased more candy for decorations and made our own icing. Good standard kit Of course these kits take some time to assemble. They all do. If you want real simplicity order a preassembled house. This house goes together easily with a little time and patience. When assembling any gingerbread creation you must give each piece time to dry before adding another section. This is a good basic gingerbread house. November 6, 2010
Very bad kit I bought this kit to make a gingerbread house with a friend. For one, there is nothing to assemble it on or in, which makes it difficult to assemble. The icing tastes like a box, and it takes a very long time to dry. The gingerbread was amazingly stiff and did not taste good. Very disappointed. December 25, 2010
Wouldn't buy again I bought this gingerbread house for my little girls (5 & 3) to decorate. First of all, you have to assemble the sides, wait at least 20-30 min, then add the roof - then wait several hours or overnight for it to dry. Was not prepared for the wait so girls were disappointed to not get started right away. Then, after the wait, there was not enough frosting to just smear on and let them have at it. If you're looking for a house for your kids, I'd find something else. December 14, 2009
