Rated 3 out of 5 by MrsC99 Good for intro to very basic cheesemaking
I ordered two of these cheese making kits ; one to try out myself and the other to give as a gift.
The supplies included are not complete as you will need to have a thermometer on hand along with other assorted stainless steel and/or plastic kitchen utensils ( not aluminum as it can react ) .
The instruction sheet I received in my kit was actually for making mozzarella which was obviously in error but luckily I was able to get the instructions from the person who received the other kit as a gift.
I located the goat milk I used at our local Trader Joes and the kit notes 1/2 gallon is needed per batch. The whole process was easy to do, a little messy and you are left with a lot of leftover whey ( wish they could tell us what to do with it as it seems such a waste to dump it ) .
The cheese mold is plastic and shaped like a kids cup with holes all around for draining. This cup is packed with the drained off curds which is interesting as it seems like such a small bit of cheese from so much milk.
The kit did provide us with a properly finished product when following their directions. It is not the same as store bought and this is noted in the information as it is very fresh ( I like the tang of goat cheese which this does not produce ).
For the money, my opinion is that this kit is fun to try out for the basics of cheese making. Buying the goat milk or the finished product at the store may be the question as around here the cost balances out to be the same .
