Our love affair with these harbingers of holiday cheer is apparent in our unique selection of nutcrackers in all sizes, shapes, themes and personalities. But how did the nutcracker become such a welcome guest at holiday parties around the world?
The legend of the nutcracker is a tale of a miserly German farmer who couldn't eat the walnuts on his property because their shells were too hard to open. After years of watching his walnuts go to waste, he offered a reward to anyone who could invent a solution. An old puppet carver created a puppet with a large mouth and jaw strong enough to crack open the shells. The farmer was so delighted with this innovation that he showered the villagers with Christmas treats, and built a special workshop where the puppet carver could perfect his craft.
It's a charming tale, and one that seems perfectly fitting for these sweet keepsakes that are now believed to bring good luck to your family and protect your home from danger. A fierce protector, the nutcracker bares its teeth to the evil spirits, but holds you and your family in its grinning gaze.
Throughout the years, nutcrackers have reflected ancestral dining customs where amusing or unusual nutcrackers were part of the social setting. Their function was to add a whimsical conversation piece as guests lingered over the dessert course, which included sweetmeats such as pecans and hazelnuts.
Whether you choose a nutcracker with a soldier's salute, an elf's whimsy or Santa's signature style, you're sure to find the perfect partner for all of your holiday celebrations.
