Tale Spin: Chindi Folk Art
In the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan, spun Chindi folk art has been a prominent part of the culture for hundreds of years. Inspired by ancient lore and traditional designs, each of these vibrantly-hued baskets and exotic animal silhouettes has its own story to tell.
We traveled to this enchantingly authentic and deeply creative place to meet with expert artisans who have perfected the creation of these handmade finds. The five-hour process has several steps.
Colorful textile remnants collected from local markets are braided and spun into lengths of Chindi rope.
Iron frames or papermache animal forms are made, and the artisan then slowly and skillfully wraps the rope around the base, alternating the patterns with an array of different tones.
The end product is 100% one-of-a-kind! Bring these decorative or functional artworks home to brighten your space, or give them as endlessly unique global gifts.
