When it comes to all things summer and outdoor picnics, Mandy Kellog Rye from Waiting on Martha is a self-proclaimed expert. And how can she not be, what with Atlanta’s hilly, lush parks and balmy clime? “I pack for picnics so often that I’ve become somewhat of a master of the picnic pack,” she says.

1. Simple and Seasonal Fare. Mandy is all about packing a menu that’s seasonal (think grilled corn salad, watermelons, a small cheese plate and a baguette) and light. She recommends keeping your serveware, utensils and plates equally light—and lightweight. Colorful melamine plates and trays and wooden utensils are not only portable—they’re stylish, too.

2. Reusable Ice Cubes. These vibrant pops of ice-cold goodness keep the ‘fresh’ in refreshments without watering down drinks.

3. Blankets and Throws. Laying down soft blankets and throws with beautiful patterns makes whiling away the summer days all the more easy and breezy.

4. Toys and Entertainment. From horse shoes to paddleball and kite flying to something as simple as blowing bubbles, there’s a lot of outdoor play to be had on a warm summer day.
