The dining table is a special place to make memories and showcase your holiday decor style. Make it the center of attention for $25 or less with this design-on-a-dime tutorial for making DIY gold mercury glass votive holders. This silver and gold tablescape idea is simple to create and will take you all the way through New Year’s Day!
Step 1: Gather your decor.
To create this look, gather natural elements from your yard, or a friend’s yard, and create a table runner from magnolia leaves, cedar twigs, and pinecones. Magnolia and cedar are great options to consider since they dry well and continue looking fresh throughout the season. Top off the look with our Glittered Wood Happy Holidays Garland, Gold Ombre Candles, and painted Modern Glass Votive Holders. A few of the votive holders can be repurposed as taper holders to add character and interest to your table.
Step 2: Paint your votives to create a gold DIY mercury glass finish.
You will need gilding paint, silver craft paint, and an application sponge to paint your votives. To save money on your craft supplies, be sure to utilize store coupons. If you’re unable to find the sponge applicator, a piece of a makeup sponge can be used. Simply cut an inexpensive makeup sponge into a circle and glue it onto the end of a chapstick.
Step 3: Apply your liquid gilding paint to the exterior of your votives.
A little liquid gilding goes a long way! Dab your sponge into the paint, remove excess on a paper towel if needed, and use a gentle, rapid tapping motion to apply the paint to the exterior of the votive.
Continue using a light touch until the exterior has been glided. Do not cover the votive completely with paint. You want to allow some glass to show through to create that mercury glass effect. You can leave the bottom of the votives unpainted.
Step 4: Using the same paint technique, apply silver craft paint to the interior of the votive.
Gently tap your silver craft paint so that it is peppered on the interior of the votive and allow to dry. When ready to use, place metal lined votive candles into the holders and watch them glow with a gorgeous silver and gold finish!
Step 5: Create your table centerpiece.
Starting with the magnolia leaves, place the the leaves on the table in a gentle swag shape. Next, tuck in small cedar twigs around the exterior leaves of your runner. Pine cones can be loosely scattered along the runner to add texture and interest. I used the silver and gold paints to decorate my pine cones to add some extra bling to my centerpiece!
Finish off your look by placing the Glittered Wood Happy Holidays Garland on top of your runner and alternate the gold mercury glass Modern Glass Votive Holders in a zigzag pattern along the exterior of the greenery.
Congratulations! Your table now looks like a million bucks and no one has to know that you spent so little in creating it—unless of course you want to share our thrifty secrets!
