Explore the Look: Desert Spirit

As we usher in fall with cooler days and—at least here in our NorCal headquarters—the much welcome pitter-patter of raindrops, we chatted with buyer Lauren Krasowski about one of World Market’s most striking boho-chic collections, and how to transition the spirit of Desert Caravan into fall.

CL: Can you wear kaftans and flowy tunics in the fall? It’s all over the fashion pages, but how practical is it for daily wear?

LK: Definitely. These tunics are meant to be worn with a camisole underneath if the fabric is sheer, and you can wear them with on-trend ripped jeans and fringe ankle booties, a la Kate Moss, Rachel Zoe, Nicole Richie and Erin Wasson. For me, when the weather starts getting colder, I’ll throw on a Ruana Wrap, which we are selling in our holiday shop (watch out for it!). We have some really cute yet practical felt floppy hats with jacquard printed bands and ribbed infinity scarves if you want to make a statement with an otherwise neutral look. I’ll also be wearing longer tunics to work, pairing it with leggings, booties and an oversized cardigan all late fall and winter long. For a more glam night look, I’ll add on some layering necklaces and statement cuffs.

CL: Boho-chic is a look, but it’s also a lifestyle. Can you talk about this a bit more?

LK: Boho-chic isn’t just a look for one season—it’s a design ethos, and like you said, a way of living. For World Market, it means bringing items that carry the rich hues of the desert with key details like fringe, embroidery and crochet. Most of our items from this collection are handmade and incredibly unique, especially our jewelry. With the holidays coming up, our statement necklaces, beadwork and tribal motifs can really amp up the look of a simple LBD.

CL: What’s your favorite fall item from this collection? I know it’s like picking between your children, but try.

LK: Hands down, my favorite is the Sari Patchwork Bag. I wear it all the time. The mix of fabrics and colors makes the bag easy to wear with your fall wardrobe and creates a statement. The size is perfect; it’s not too big so it’s an everyday carryall. The fabrics are vintage from India and each bag is special and unique; the mirrors and embroidery give it that extra texture and detail. I like this bag so much that I’ve been wearing it everyday!
