I can’t think of a better way to start this year than totally redesigning my workspace. Whether you work at home or away at an office, the truth is, we all spend a lot of time at our desks; creating an environment that fosters productivity is necessary. Today I am sharing four helpful tips on how to create a calm, relaxed, organized, and beautiful space in which to work and get things done.
Tip 1: Organize
All too often I end up with a drawer that is filled with things I don’t need, so this tip is especially helpful for me. Start by sorting through everything in your workspace and mercilessly getting rid of everything you don’t need. Take what’s left and arrange it neatly and practically—everything should be within reach yet aesthetically in balance with everything else. Once everything on your desk has a home, I promise this will help you feel calm, relaxed, and prepared for the task at hand each time you sit at your desk.
Tip 2: Decorate
This is the fun part! Fill your desk with things you love. You should be able to sit down in your workspace and be surrounded by beauty, inspiration, and things that simply bring you joy. Try framing some photos or paintings and placing them on or above your desk, or getting a new vase and keeping a bouquet of fresh flowers at all times. Having beautiful blooms or a pleasing image to look at can be a great way to keep your spirits enlivened.
Tip 3: Add color
While basic beiges, grays, and whites are great starting points for good design, try to add colorful accents and flourishes to bring your workspace to life. Try choosing one or two colors and choosing items in these hues that you’d have on or around your desk anyway. I used a light blue mason jar for a vase, some gold accents pieces, and a few colorful paintings in my work space. Adding pops of color will not only help in making your desk your own, but it will help fill it with personality.
Tip 4: Set the mood
Productivity and creativity are often influenced by the mood of a workspace. In this realm, scent and lighting are among the most important aspects. Whether it be a candle, a diffuser, or incense, fill your workspace with whatever aromas make you feel calm. In terms of lighting, choose something that serves your purposes well without becoming too bright or distracting. I went with a small table lamp with a dark shade that adds an accent to the natural light during the day and gives me evenly distributed light at night. Good lighting and good aromas will definitely make you more comfortable and will transform your space into a welcoming environment.
