Picnics are one of my favorite things about summertime. I’m talking about spur-of-the-moment sandwiches on the lawn, and meticulously-planned feasts. What’s not to love about sitting out in nature, enjoying some company and a plate full of delicious food?
Here are my top 10 picnic tips to make your picnic a fun, delicious, and stress-free outdoor feast!
1. Location, Location, Location
It’s important to consider your location and the time of day when planning your picnic. Whether you are dining al fresco at a park or beach, you want to pick a location with both plenty of shade and sun. It’s nice to have options, so pick a spot with shade trees or bring a large umbrella or canopy to provide you with relief from the sun.
2. Prepare a simple menu
It’s easy to create your very own effortless picnic spread; just remember that simple is often the best. Plan ahead and decide what foods travel well and are easy to eat while sitting on the grass. Pack food in individual containers, DIY wax paper bags, and disposable lunch boxes with labels for each person for that extra-special touch.
Our perfect picnic menu includes: roasted garlic caprese sandwiches, pasta salad, strawberry watermelon salad with honey lime vinaigrette, sliced bread, assorted meats & cheese, fresh fruit, and cookies.
3. Pack a comfortable seat
Bring a large water-resistant blanket to sit on if you plan to dine on the grass, or a reusable tablecloth for picnic tables. Don’t forget to pack extra throws and pillows so you can lounge comfortably while you are dining outdoors.
4. Pack eco-conscious, reusable items
Create less waste and save money and pack reusable items that are lightweight and easy to pack. Food presentation is always important when you are planning an event and a picnic isn’t any different. Plate your meats and cheeses on wood grain melamine serving trays. Serve ice cold beverages in acrylic glasses with colorful reusable ice cubes for a fun twist. Make sure you toss in a few extra grocery sacks so you can stash the dirty items before packing up.
5. Contain it
You’ve planned the perfect picnic menu and picked a picturesque location, now it’s time to pack it all up. There are a variety of ways you can contain everything: picnic baskets are fun, coolers are practical, and reusable totes are inexpensive, but whichever way you choose, make sure it’s portable.
6. Keep cool and drink up
Make sure you pack a variety of drinks to keep everyone well hydrated while out in the sun. Keep it simple and pack water, lemonade or fruit-infused soda in a fun and stylish aqua retro drink cooler. Or relax with a glass of wine—just make sure you don’t forget the bottle opener! Use reusable round ice cubes to keep drinks cool and keep them from getting watered down.
7. Don’t forget the non-food essentials
8. Don’t forget the fun and games
While eating and enjoying good company and the great outdoors are at the top of the list when it comes to picnics, don’t forget to include a few activities to keep everyone entertained. Pack a deck of cards or throw in a few balls, a frisbee, or books to keep the fun going all afternoon long.
9. Turn up the tunes
No picnic party is complete without a little music! Pack a little radio or speaker to listen to cheerful, soothing summertime tunes.
10. Good company
The most important part of any picnic is having good company to enjoy it with. Invite your family and friends to join you for an afternoon of sun, relaxation, good food and adventure.
Pack a picnic and head outdoors! It doesn’t take much to turn an ordinary afternoon into an extraordinary summer adventure.
